The Ignorant Mary at Cana

At the site of Jesus' first miracle, we read the text from John and considered how Mary seems to be the main character in the story. One poem that has helped me imagine this interchange between mother and son was written by Killian McDonnell, who is a catholic priest and began writing poetry in his 80's. He captures the maternal reflections and frustrations as well as the imagined future and blossoming faith in Messiah, her flesh and blood yet Son of the Father.

Here is a link to the poem in his book Yahweh's Other Shoe. I hope the link works (forgive the LONG web address)

The closing stanza of the poem:

I wonder:  if a hundred and twenty
gallons is the measure of extravagance
at the beginning of glory,
what will be the end?
